Date:
15 September 2010, 9:30 - 12:30
Location:

Residence Palace
Centre de Presse International
Rue de la loi 155
1040 Bruxelles

At a time when willingness to finance external aid is diminishing in European Member States and democratisation processes experience a worldwide backlash, new instruments and methodologies have to be identified. In order to keep public support for external assistance programmes high, Political Foundations in Europe strive to search for efficient concepts and initiatives aiming to foster development and democracy building in partner countries.

„You have to learn quickly how to use new media if there is no other way around” was the conclusion of the panel “Using new media in civic campaigns by democracy activists”. Arjen Berkvens, the network coordinator of ENoP, chaired the round of three experts. The introduction of the Dutch MEP Marietje Schaake, rapporteur on the role of culture and new media in the EU´s external actions was imported via video record

Iryna Vidanava, presented the Multimedia youth magazine CDMAG/34 in Belarus which exists in digital version only. Daniel Ureña, MAS Consulting/Spain, gave an insight into the global conditions of political campaigning today. Siniša Šikman from, CANVAS - Center for Applied Non Violent Actions and Strategies/Serbia focussed on the relation between media and society and showed examples of oppositional campaigns in the last years.

The second panel “New media in development education dealing with alternative ways to involve the next generation” was chaired by Gordana Berjan, North-South Centre of the Council of Europe. Kasia Szeniawska from GLEN, the Global Education Network of Young Europeans, Poland focused on the conditions of Development Education. Michael Sieben presented the “Africa Camp” of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. The annual event “Africadag” and its web presence (homepage, youtube, facebook) was the topic of the contribution of Peter Heintze, director of the organizing Evert Vermeer Stichting. Berjan closed the session alluding to the DE watch report.

The unofficial part of the event in the atrium of the Residence Palace offered the opportunity to exchange to the panellists and the participants from the EU institutions, member states, media, other CSOs and ENoP member organisations.
