The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, founded in 1964, is a foundation affiliated to the
Christian-Democratic movement and was named after the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. The foundation carries out country programmes and projects in the field of governance, media promotion, civil society development, parliamentary cooperation, rule of law, decentralisation and local democracy promotion, human rights protection and gender issues, socio-economic framework development and poverty alleviation in more than 100 countries on four continents.

In about 70 countries, branch offices have been set up to coordinate and implement the projects in cooperation with more than 200 local partner organisations. The average project duration is between 3-12 years. The foundation’s annual budget for its international activities amounts to more than 60 Mio Euro. KAS has recently completed or is currently implementing European co-funded projects in 12 different countries – in the Non-State Actors and Local Authority Program, the Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights, the Partnership for Peace Program, under the EDF, the Asia Urbs Programme and under the Stability Instrument (see www.kas.de/euproject).

In Vietnam 1 to 1.3 million people added to urban areas each year to 2020. The current urbanization rate of 27% today is expected to increase to 45% in 2020. Municipalities need to find innovative solutions to cope with this challenge in order to balance interests of different stakeholders in this process and to improve its responsiveness and services vis-à-vis its citizens.

Taking your life in your own hands necessitates capacity building right from the start. In order to achieve self-sustainable living conditions for peasants and craftsmen in the communities of Santiago Atitlán, San Pedro La Laguna, San Juan La Laguna, San Pablo La Laguna, Santa Clara La Laguna and Santa María Visitación a capacity building with and for the Federation of Mayan People and its members was started.

The mind-set of every human being is shaped by its solidarisation process. A large part of the latter takes place in schools. Therefore, the project, which was running from April 2007 to March 2009, aimed at the establishment of educational tools and mechanisms on peace education through 15 schools in Israel, Jordan and Palestine.
