On Saturday 15th January 2011, in a symbolic ceremony, the Prime Minister, in his capacity as leader of the Nationalist Party PN, signed a public deed establishing AZAD as a foundation at law.
Eight member organisations are involved into the first joint EU project implemented by ENoP organisations. The PRINCE project aims ro raise awarness in the area of future enlargement towards the Western Balkans.
Representatives from the CSO steering group of the Joint Africa EU strategies (JAES) met at the ENoP premises for the briefings follow up and planing round.
On the agenda where reports on the meetings in the second half of 2010 in Brussels, Cairo, Tripoli.
With great regret ENoP has to announce the death of Dr Peter Weilemann, the head of the Brussels office of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. Dr Weilemann passed away on the evening on 9 December after a short and serious illness. In Mr Weilemann ENoP loses one of his founding personalities, a reliable supporter over the years, an appreciated mentor and friend. We express our empathy to his family which lost a husband and a father. The funeral will take place in Bonn on 16 December.
On the initiative of its Swedish member SILC, ENoP hosted the documentary screening of 'Grandchildren of the Cuban revolution'. The film disclosed the viewpoints of the younger Cuban generation on the current political situation in the country, freedom of expression and democracy. The director of the movie, Carlos Montaner, was present at the event and participated in the discussions, following the film.
The Cuban journalist and dissident Osvaldo Alfonso was also present during the screening and the discussions. Among the guests were representatives from the European Parliament, political foundations in Europe, representatives of the political scene in Serbia and film-makers. Due to the high interest towards the movie and the questions raised in it, ENoP plans to screen the movie again in 2011.
ENoP participated in the European Development Days 2010 with a stand at the Development village expo. During the two-day exhibition, ENoP presented its activities and materials, provided by its members. The Network distributed its latest quarterly editions, consisting of member-organizations’ articles on relevant political topics.
Placed beside the stand of the Belgium presidency, the ENoP stand enjoyed great interest and was visited by high-level European, ACP and Partner countries’ representatives. Apart from its presence at the Development village stand, ENoP co-organized a high-level panel on ‘Do Europeans care about the rest of the world’.
The ENoP office invited MEPs and representatives from member organisations to an exchange breakfast on democracy support in EU external programmes. Malgorzata Wasilewska from DG Relex updated the group on the state of play concerning the identification of pilot countries to exercise the implementation of the respective Council conclusions, published on 17 November, 2009.
The breakfast was hosted by the Dutch MEP Thijs Berman/S&D and took place in the European Parliament. Among the participants were: Edward McMillan Scott/ALDE, Michael Gahler/EPP, Dick Toornstra/OPPD and representatives of ENoP organizations in Bulgaria, Germany and Slovenia.
Rama Naidu, the South African representative of ENoP, played an important role in the high-level panel ‘Do Europeans care about the rest of the world?’ The director of the Democracy Development Programme/ Durban stressed the necessity to have uncomfortable questions posed. With a dose of self-irony, he introduced himself as the ‘voice of the South’, while reminding that development education must not stay a European internal issue only.
Among the participants in the panel were: Angelo Baglio/ Europe Aid, Franziska Keller/ MEP, Rilli Lappalainen/CONCORD board member, Helmuth Hartmeyer/ Austrian Development Agency, Spencer Henson/ Institute of Development studies. The panellists at the discussion stated that development policies were not enough, but responsible and engaged Europeans were also needed to build up a just and sustainable world. The event concluded with the announcement of the World Aware Education Award.
The Spanish movie director Carlos Montaner will be present during his documentary screening "The Grandchildren of the Cuban Revolution" at ENoP’s premises on 8 December, 5:30 p.m. A light lunch and beverages will be provided.
