Today is the second anniversary of the International Day of Democracy. Two years ago, in November 2007, the UN declared the 15th
of September to be the International Day of Democracy, in celebration of the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Democracy by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1997. This day is meant as both a celebration of democracy and as a reminder that the need to promote and protect it is as urgent now as ever. The theme in 2009 is “Democracy and political tolerance”.
