Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung Conference: "European Development Policy – Goals and Challenges", 19 May 2011 - Brussels

The ENoP member Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung organises the conference "European Development Policy - Goals and Challenges", which will take place on May 19th at the Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to the European Union.

With the repercussions of the economic crisis and the revolutions in North Africa, European development policy is undergoing a critical reevaluation.
The review of progress on the MDGs makes clear that the European Union needs to do more in support of countries efforts towards the achievement of the MDGs, not just in terms of Official Development Assistance (ODA), but at least as importantly, in terms of how aid is granted and used.

Andris Piebalgs, EU‐Commissioner for Development, will give a first outline of the future of European development policy. Dr. Christian Ruck, Vice Chairman of the CDU/ CSU group in the German Bundestag, will present the German position towards the Green Book (lunched by the EC in November last year with the title "EU development policy in support of inclusive growth and sustainable development - Increasing the impact of EU development policy") and will look beyond conventional programmes to promote democratic structures in partner countries. Dr. Imme Scholz, deputy director of the German Development Institute, will give a critical analysis of European development policies and will argue that new global challenges require new thinking, not least in the sphere of global collective action.

Conference language: English, German
