Maltese ENoP member AZAD established as a foundation

On Saturday 15th January 2011, in a symbolic ceremony, the Prime Minister, in his capacity as leader of the Nationalist Party PN, signed a public deed establishing AZAD as a foundation at law.

MEP Simon Busuttil is the new President of AZAD whereas the new board is composed of Pierre Attard; Noel Buttigieg Scicluna (who will also serve as Executive Director); Richard Cachia Caruana; Alan Camilleri; Antoinette Caruana; Gordon Cordina; Alan Deidun; Ann Fenech; Josef Lauri; Alex Perici Calascione; RoseMarie Privitelli; Anika Psaila Savona; Alex Tortell; Franco Valletta and David Zahra. Max Ganado will serve as an external consultant to the board.

It was five years ago that AZAD, the Academy for the Development of a Democratic Environment,  was set up. At this time the very essence of democracy in Malta was put into question. Although AZAD was set up by the PN and draws on Christian democrat inspiration, it is open to contrasting political ideas. In particular AZAD will contribute to new ideas in policy-making and to political education of all those who wish to render a service in public political life – two crucial ingredients for the enhancement of democracy.
